2013 Volkswagen UP | Review, Price, Interior, Exterior, Engine |
The all new Volkswagen Up, or as the marketeers have dubbed it, the “up!”, is VW’s attempt to make a vehicle that harks back to the original VW Beetle, a car for the masses. The up! will first be launched in the European market in December 2011. There are 3 versions for different budgets and needs. The “take up!” is the entry-level car, the “move up!” is the mid range one and the “high up!” is the top version. At the car’s launch, there will also be 2 independent models based on the high up!, namely the “up! black” and the “up! white”.
In the U.S., the idea of a car smaller than a Mini conjures mental images of a cramped interior, no trunk space, and a wheezing, gutless engine. (That the Smart Fortwo is one of the only cars sold here shorter than a Mini supports this impression.) It’s always been a different story in other parts of the world, with some such cars enjoying a cultlike following. Volkswagen’s tiny cars have flirted with this sort of immortality on occasion (read a brief history of tiny VWs here), and the company is hoping for similar success with its new Up!, an entirely new minicar being launched in Europe next spring.
Finally, here's a production car that looks like the concept from which it was derived. The Volkswagen Up! (yes, it includes the exclamation point) doesn’t deviate much at all from the show car that surprised the industry four years ago at least not visually. Like that original, this final version will debut at the Frankfurt auto show.
