2012 Jaguar XJ Review And Picture - In the full-size luxury sedan segment there’s a small but great selection to choose from. If you’re looking for all the luxury and legroom you could ever need, without buying a mega-dollar Bentley or Rolls-Royce, then something like the 2012 Jaguar XJ will be ideal. It competes with the flagship sedan models from Audi, BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz, but the Jaguar stands out from the crowd, not from old-world styling like that which plagued its predecessor, but from its avant-garde lines and British charm.

Yes, you’ll feel like James Bond rolling around in the XJ, or at least his chauffeur. Up front there’s a powerful grille that’s flanked by two cat-like eyes that taper back into a gorgeous body. The only odd feature is the blacked-out C-pillar found on some models, which ruins what is otherwise a perfect roofline. Looks aside, the XJ also offers some very exciting engines. There are three flavors to choose from, all of them V-8. The base XJ gets a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V-8, which is tuned to deliver 385 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque.

Next in line is the mid-level XJ Supercharged, which gets--as you may have guessed--a supercharged version of this engine complete with 470 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque. Topping out the range is the XJ Supersport, which features the same supercharged powerplant found in the XJ Supercharged but with output turned to 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque.

All are matched to a six-speed automatic transmission, which is a brilliant unit though short a couple of gears on some of its rivals. Also note that the XJ, while offering both standard and long-wheelbase models, is only available with rear-wheel drive. Buyers in the Northern states may prefer something with all-wheel drive for those risky winter drives.

The 2012 Jaguar XJ ranks 9 out of 12 Super Luxury Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 26 published reviews and test drives of the Jaguar XJ, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

With loads of standard features, a stunning design and powerful engine choices, test drivers say that the 2012 Jaguar XJ has a lot going for it. However, the XJ loses points for its fussy cabin electronics.

Reviewers say the 2012 Jaguar XJ is a bargain for super luxury car shoppers who seek ample power and a host of standard interior features. Performance is aided by its lightweight aluminum body, standard V8 engine and road-holding adaptive suspension that impress nearly all who drive it. And while the base XJ is no slouch, in Supercharged and Supersport trims the XJ can keep up with nearly anything on the road.

While the XJ is nimble for such a large car, some reviewers say that if you’re looking for a posh, luxurious ride, the Lexus LS or Mercedes-Benz S-Class may be better options. And while the automotive press likes the steering, not all are impressed with the XJ’s brakes. One test driver thought they had a grabby feel. Still, most agree that thanks to its light weight, the XJ drives like a much smaller car, which is definitely a good thing.

Some test drivers love the opulent surroundings inside the 2012 XJ, while others see room for improvement. Materials are mostly high-quality; some reviewers even call the interior stunning. But, one test driver comments that some small trim pieces look a little cheap and out of place, and that the radical interior styling is a departure when compared with flagship sedans like the Mercedes S-Class. The XJ’s seats are comfortable, but back seat legroom isn’t the best in regular-wheelbase models. Additionally, some taller drivers might want a little extra headroom.
